I grew up in the French Alps, where my mum would take my sister and me on seasonal adventures – picking primroses and cowslips in spring, collecting chestnuts and walnuts in autumn, searching for tadpoles in streams.

She would always stop and smell everything – the forest, herbs and flowers – and teach us their names: jasmin, chèvrefeuille, romarin, châtaignier, eucalyptus, muguet.

My love of gardening began with my grand-maman, watering her tulips, pulling weeds and eating sun-warmed raspberries straight from the garden.

Today I stop to smell the plants I pass, and I teach their names to my daughters. Some remembered, some we learn together. We forage chickweed for salads, wild garlic, nettles for tea, chestnuts and mushrooms in autumn, and visit the bluebells every spring. These small traditions have become the rhythm of our years.

More recently we started a garden and began keeping chickens on my partner’s dairy farm in Nunton. Being in the garden brings me back to a childlike state of play, curiosity and deep focus. I love learning which plants grow well together – which herbs and flowers help deter pests, feed the soil and attract pollinators. Everything has its role in the balance of the ecosystem.

Not so long ago it was normal to grow and forage our food, and to know the ingredients the land provides that help maintain balance and wellbeing.

That connection to nature and to the women in my lineage, and a desire to care for myself and my family with the best ingredients and no compromise is what led to the creation of Motherline Botanicals.

Our balms are made from simple, potent, and carefully chosen ingredients – grass-fed tallow, beeswax, botanical infusions and plant oils – selected for how they support the skin barrier. Water-free and slowly crafted in small batches on the farm, and designed to deeply nourish and protect the skin.

As Dr. Zach Bush writes:
